For teachers

Grid Gang in the classroom

The spelling game where pupils earn the right to give their teacher a moustache. A team word puzzle on your projector; pupils join on Chromebooks, iPads or laptops with a 4-letter code. No installs, no accounts, no pupil data kept.

Try it in your next lesson

Tap the button on your laptop or phone — that device holds the teacher controls. Then open gridgang.app/tv on the projector and type the room code. Free, and nothing to sign up for.

😀 Cartoons by default

In a classroom game cameras are off and every pupil is a cartoon character — a dino, robot, unicorn, pirate… The cartoon is what goes on the projector, and the silly filters land on the cartoon.

📋 Your class list stays in your browser

Paste your pupils’ first names once. When they join, pupils tap their own name — no typing, so no rude names and no “Mr Brown smells”. Each name can only be taken once (you can release it if someone picks the wrong one).

The list is saved in your own browser for next lesson. Our server only holds it while the game is open, and forgets it when the room closes. Prefer no names at all? Choose fun names and everyone gets one like “Speedy Otter” — only you see who’s who. You still let each pupil in.

🎯 Every pupil at their own level

You set each pupil’s shortest word — 3, 4, 5 or 6 letters — and can change it mid-game. Nobody else ever sees it, and it never appears on the projector. No “baby level”.

🚨 The panic button

One tap on All avatars turns every face on screen into a cartoon, instantly. You can also turn any single tile into a cartoon, mute everyone, rename or remove a pupil, or switch the filter shop off. If a pupil makes a rude hand sign on camera, their tile swaps to their cartoon for ten seconds by itself.

All the controls are on your device, never on the projector. If your laptop dies mid-round, the round finishes by itself and nobody new gets in until you’re back.

✏️ This week’s spellings

Type in up to 20 words (3 to 7 letters) — this week’s spellings, a topic list, anything. The game hides as many as fit into every grid. Finding one earns bonus coins, and it’s ticked off on your summary. Words go through the same rude-word check as names.

📊 Your end-of-session summary — yours, not ours

When the game ends you see which words each pupil found (and which of your spellings were found). It is shown only on your screen, and you can save or print it yourself. We never keep it — once the room closes, it’s gone from our side.

Playing over several lessons? The maze journey gives you a short save code (no names in it) to type in next time. You keep it, not us.

🖥️ For school IT

Grid Gang is an ordinary website. Nothing to install, no browser extensions, no accounts, no pupil data stored. Any recent Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox works (iPads on iOS 15 or later).

Please allow Address Port Needed for
The game — pages, word meanings, the face-tracking software and the live game connection gridgang.app
www.gridgang.app
TCP 443 — HTTPS and secure WebSockets (wss://) Everything. Without it nothing works.
Video connection check (STUN) stun.cloudflare.com UDP 3478 Cameras and voice only
Live video and voice relay (Cloudflare Realtime) Cloudflare’s network — no fixed hostname; the browser is given the address when it connects (Cloudflare’s address ranges) UDP (WebRTC, encrypted) Cameras and voice only
  • Setting up each video connection is an ordinary HTTPS request to our own domain (/api/rtc/…); our server talks to Cloudflare for you. If your proxy filters by path, allow /api/* on gridgang.app.
  • The face-tracking software (about 7 MB, downloaded once and cached) comes from our own domain too — no other websites are needed.
  • Web filters (Smoothwall, Securly, Lightspeed…): please allow gridgang.app as Education / Games. New domains are often blocked until approved.
  • Managed Chromebooks: if cameras will be used, camera permission for gridgang.app may need allowing in the admin console.
  • If video is blocked, the lesson still works — every pupil simply shows as their cartoon. The puzzle never waits for video.

5-minute test before a lesson

  1. On the projector computer, open gridgang.app/tv. Page won’t load? The domain is blocked — send IT the first row above.
  2. On one pupil device, on the pupil Wi-Fi, open gridgang.app, type the code and join. Let them in. Can’t connect? Secure WebSockets on port 443 are blocked.
  3. Find one word on the pupil device — it should appear on the big screen within a second.
  4. Only if you’ll allow cameras: switch on Cameras allowed and tap the camera on the pupil device. The face (with a filter) should show within about ten seconds. Cartoon stays? Video is blocked — send IT the table above.

📁 Data protection paperwork

Because nothing is recorded and nothing outlives the room, the paperwork is short. Our privacy policy explains exactly what is processed and for how long, and the safety page explains it in plain words for parents. If your school or local authority needs a DPIA or wants us to sign a data processing agreement, email hugh.mackenzie247@gmail.com and we’ll help.
